Asana Spotlight: Warrior II

One of the most empowering asanas (poses) out there, Warrior II finds itself in many yoga classes, and for good reason. This strong pose is both accessible and challenging, and like so many asanas, is beneficial for beginner yogis all the way up to masters. It enlivens the legs and makes us feel strong, and the reach of the arms opens the heart and strengthens the back. For me, the pose also has a strong psychological effect; the powerful drishti (focal point) inspires confidence and yet is calming; the shape of the arms and legs taps into some innate fierceness, and its very name “Warrior II”, and even the sanksrit name, “Virabhadrasana”, conjures a sense of power and grace.

Also like so many asanas, there is more to Warrior II than meets the eye. The trunk stands erect over strong legs, and the arms move away from the midline of the body, calling for action almost everywhere.

Here is a diagram of Warrior II, and the most fundamental actions of the different body parts (click on image to view larger):

The feet are very important to keeping the leg joints aligned and working safely in the pose. The front foot points directly ahead, and the back foot angles in about 15 degrees. The tendencies are to allow the front foot to turn in and back foot to turn out, both of which are dangerous for their respective knees.

Another misaligned tendency is to lean the trunk forward over the front knee. We want to have the spine long and vertical, and to help with that we can concentrate on reaching the back arm away from the trunk and tucking the back hip joint in.

Don’t worry if your front knee doesn’t bend this much! Focus on keeping your front shin bone vertical, and on descending the thigh bone as much as you can within your limits.

This is an asana that could be talked about for hours, but hopefully even this little “spotlight” sheds a bit of light onto this very important and commonly practiced posture!

June Anniversary Yoga Challenge & Grayling Yoga Basics Class

yoga

The sun is out, the sky is blue,

And next month, we’re turning 2!

June 16th is our 2 year anniversary, and we want YOU to be part of the celebration by taking part in our June Yoga Challenge!

The rules are simple. Go to 12 classes within the month of June, and win a Stone Turtle Yoga t-shirt! That’s 12 classes in 30 days, from June 1st to June 30th. All classes at both locations may be counted, including the Yoga Basics classes on June 1st and 15th. By the time we add classes to the schedule around the middle of June, you will have well over 30 classes within the month to choose from to reach your 12. TOTALLY doable! Eligible classes for the June Yoga Challenge will start with Yoga Basics on Sunday, June 1st at the Grayling studio (Ausable Dance Center), and the last day of classes for the challenge will be Monday, June 30th. The t-shirts are very cool, but your real prize is how great you’re going to feel after this much yoga. 🙂

Yoga Basics Class coming up! Sunday, June 1st, 1:00pm-2:00pm – Grayling studio

We packed the studio at our last Yoga Basics class, which covered the fundamentals of yoga in a welcoming, learning environment. Our next class on June 1st will be FREE for new Stone Turtle Yoga students, and cost just $5 for existing students. Teacher Lexi Bondar will cover the basics of yoga, including breathing techniques and yoga postures. This class is a great opportunity to brush up on your fundamentals, or to invite someone who has never tried yoga!

Lastly, the Higgins Lake studio WILL have air conditioning for tonight’s class! Hope to see you at Hatha Yoga at 5:30pm.

Namaste,

Mariah, Lexi & Stu

Memorial Day Weekend Schedule and New Teacher

Due to the holiday weekend, we will not have either of the Empower Yoga classes on Saturday, May 24th. There WILL be a Hatha Yoga class on Monday, May 26th (Memorial Day) at 10:00am in Grayling (this coincides with the normal schedule). We hope everyone enjoys an awesome Memorial Day weekend!

Also, some of you had the treat of taking last Thursday and/or Friday’s class with a new face in the STY world. Sarah Lange, a Grayling native, who recently received her 200-hour teacher training in New Zealand, will be teaching occasional classes at Stone Turtle Yoga. This week, she will teach Thursday (5/22) evening’s Slow Flow/Yin + Meditation class at 6:00pm in Higgins Lake. We are so grateful to have such a lovely person share her passion for teaching with us!

Aside from the above schedule changes, this week’s classes are the same as usual, as are next week’s classes. You can view the current class schedule here: https://clients.mindbodyonline.com/ASP/adm/home.asp?studioid=29064

Have a great week, and stay tuned for a very special event coming up in June to celebrate our 2 year anniversary!

Namaste,

Mariah, Lexi & Stu
