Ashtanga Focus: Week One!

Practice and all is coming!”…K. Pattabhi Jois

What are the roots of yoga? What is yogic philosophy? Starting this week, the Stone Turtle Yoga team will begin to explore the principles of Ashtanga yoga – the 8 limbs of yoga – during our regularly scheduled classes. Each Sunday, we will send out a blog post describing the intention for the upcoming week. Each week’s intention will typically include a piece of Ashtanga philosophy, a new pranayama and/or asana practice, and a yoga home-practice challenge. Classes throughout the week may involve one, some, or all of these themes. Keep in mind that classes will maintain the same level of asana practice as always, just with the added studio-wide intention for each week!
Ashtanga Yoga defined:

Patanjali, the author of the Yoga Sutras, describes the Eight aspects of yoga as limbs of a tree.
Ashta=Eight   Anga=Limb  Yoga=Union

K. Pattahbi Jois and his teacher Krishnamacharya developed the Ashtanga Yoga Vinyasa based on these teachings of Patanjali.
The Eight Limbs of Yoga

Yama-Ethical disciplines (5 disciplines)
Niyama-Self Observation (5 observations)
Asana-Posture
Pranayama-Breath Control
Pratyahara-Sense Withdrawl
Dharana-Concentration
Dhyana-Meditation
Samadhi-A state of joy and peace.

Meet the teacher!

Patty Clark has been teaching yoga for over 20 years, and has vast experience working with a wide array of ability levels and body types, as well as students with various physical limitations. She has been teaching at Stone Turtle Yoga for 6 months, and has already greatly enriched the STY community with her deep understanding of Yoga, and kind, caring teaching style. From Patty:

Diagnosed with degenerative disc disease at age 15, I came to asana (yoga postures) as way to manage pain. I became certified in 1999 when I completed Jonny Kest’s Center for Yoga Teacher Training. Since then, I’ve taught over 1,000 hours and am registered with the Yoga Alliance as an Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher, ERYT. Initially, I founded Dragonfly Yoga in Cleveland, OH. My teaching included all levels and conditions of student’s at my studio as well as The Cleveland Clinic Foundation and University Hospitals. I most recently taught classes and workshops throughout Northern Oakland County, MI and I have hosted amazing river/yoga retreats in Grayling, MI. I’ve been fortunate to study, practice and be inspired by teachers locally and nationally. I’ve also learned so much from my students as well as self study. My biggest influences are Patanjali, Sarah Powers, Donna Farhi, Judith Lasater, Bob Marley, Eckhart Tolle, Deepak Chopra and Mother Nature.

Class Schedule Changes + Upcoming Ashtanga Focus

Join us for R.E.S.T. Yoga, starting next week!

Effective next Thursday, September 28th, we will be adding an evening class in Higgins Lake with Patty Clark, which will meet from 5:30pm to 6:30pm every Thursday. The class is called R.E.S.T Yoga, and stands for Relax, Explore, Surrender, and Transform.

R.E.S.T Yoga is a fun and gentle practice, perfect for beginners or anyone in need of a good stress relief. While exploring conscious movement and breath, you will not only improve overall strength and flexibility but also calm the mind attuning it to the inner light of awareness. Surrender to your breath and allow your heart to radiate with truth and love. Move freely from a place of compassion and acceptance to create more peace and ease within in your practice and daily life. Rest your mind, rejuvenate your body and restore balance while feeling energized and transformed! This class will move at a mellower pace than other Stone Turtle Yoga classes, and will frequently use wall space and other props for enhanced support and relaxation.

Also, as we move forward into fall, we will be canceling a two classes at our Higgins Lake location:

Effective this Saturday, September 23rd:
Saturday Hatha Yoga in Higgins Lake at 8:45am with Mariah: Cancelled
Thursday Hatha Yoga in Higgins Lake at 9:30am with Mariah: Cancelled

You can view these changes, as well as the complete class schedule by clicking here.

Stay tuned for our upcoming Ashtanga focus during our regularly scheduled classes!

Based on questions from various students, including: What are the roots of yoga? How can I be more certain of my alignment? I want to dig deeper in philosophy? We have decided to introduce Ashtanga yoga as a theme during our regularly scheduled classes. Over the course of the next few weeks, we will present the 8 limbs of yoga. Each succeeding week we will focus on one Yama then moving into Niyamas as a philosophy/intention. Each Sunday we will send out a blog post describing the intention for the upcoming week.

Thank you to Patty Clark for this inspired idea! Keep an eye on your email this Sunday for a post about this coming week’s intention.

Thanks and Namaste!
